Only registered voters can vote using a randomly generated PIN, with the option to choose a secondary layer of validation for extra security like Last 4 SSN, Member ID, or a One-Time-Password. The AAA's website also uses integrated reCAPTCHA to protect the voting site from spam, abuse, and bots.
Our system uses SSL-grade security TLS1.2 to secure the ballots and anti-forgery tokens, making it challenging to modify, delete, or forge. We also encrypt our data after the user has cast their vote using AS256 strength, then the data at rest is kept in a FIPS 140-2 compliant system using 256-bit AES encryption.
The Blockchain technology uses a cryptographic hash, which acts as a signature for a data set. We generate an almost unique encrypted 256-bit (32-byte) signature for each voting record that cannot be decrypted back to the original text. Using Blockchain technology makes it much more difficult to tamper with electronic votes and allows the system to be verifiable. Anyone can independently verify all voting records.
The voting system stores voter information separately from the votes, with two privacy options available to the client for how this data is stored:
- Secret Ballot Election – The system immediately removes the connection between the voter and their votes, and no one can alter or trace back the votes to the voter.
- Confidential Ballot Election – The system maintains the connection between the voter and their vote until the election has been certified and closed. Only an authorized client-side person can request the vote reset during the election to allow voters to recast their ballot. Only an authorized AAA Election Administrator can reset the votes. Upon official certification and election closing, the system removes the connection between voters and their votes, and no one can alter or trace back the ballots to the voter.
The security and privacy of election information is a top priority for the AAA and we have implemented best practice policies, technologies, and procedures to help them. Our system records the source, maintains an audit trail to capture changes, uses Flashback Technology to restore records to any point in the last 365 calendar days, and performs an annual web application security assessment and a dedicated secure code review.
